 Do you have any desires as to what we should read next?  There are several other fine MacDonald novels, such as Malcolm or Donal Grant, I would enjoy reading with you.  Or what about Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, a novel of Williams, or some of Chesterton's essays?  Please let me know.  I enjoy doing this only if I have fellow readers.

Hello, Prof. Hein. I am open to whatever, but would like to read along. I have never read anything by Williams (I am assuming Charles Williams of the Inklings?) and would be willing to try that. I love The Lord of the Rings, and have read quite a bit of Chesterton and always get something out of his thinking!

Thomas Wingfold: Chapters 29 - 45

Much of the fascination in this week’s reading lies in the subtle yet persistent ways in which God is shown to be working in the characters’ lives in a variety of situations. Helen’s spiritual awakening is begun by her selflessly ministering to her brother Leopold.  “. . . without any thought, not to say knowledge of him, she had yet been doing the will of the Heart of the world.”  This is the beginning of her way to God. When Leopold expresses a desire to talk to Bascombe, Helen is reluctant to bring the two together.  In riding with Bascombe and hearing his opinions, something within her takes exception to them: “She thought her cousin very clever, but could not enjoy what he said. . . .”  As one reads, the text continues to give evidence of God’s subtle working in her thought life. When Wingfold visits Polwarth, the latter shares a poem he wrote describing the mystery of God’s working within his own experience.  He goes so far as to say his very thoughts come to him from God:

Thomas Wingfold Chapters 11 - 28

Note: We are off to a fine start.  My heartfelt thanks to each of you who commented after the entry on Chapters 1 - 10.  I  personally found the comments very helpful and I’m sure all who read them have.  We hope to see more participation.  Please feel free to express whatever reactions–positive or negative–you may have, as you react honestly to the text.  MacDonald is concerned in this novel, as in many others, with carefully delineating the experience of various individuals and personality types as they become aware of their need for God, and who then by steps move into a happy and productive relationship with him.   Our reading in this week’s chapters concerns the initial process of awakening as it is taking place in Thomas Wingfold and in Helen.    After a restless night, Wingfold awakes “consciously uncomfortable,” with the terrible realization that “his very life was a lie.” He had been reading each Sunday morning a sermon composed and left to him by his old clergyman uncle
